How Do DOT Drug Tests Work?

What Drugs Are Tested For Under a DOT Test?

A drug test can be used to identify any drug. However, DOT alcohol testing is the most widely used drug-prevention measure for workers who care about safety.

Any combination of DOT saliva alcohol tests or DOT alcohol breathalyzers with PAS devices can be used for DOT alcohol screening. However, EBT devices must be used in a laboratory for DOT confirmation testing.

Who Uses DOT Drug Testing?

A DOT test is a drug test process that is mandated by people and private companies working with the DOT or under its control. DOT-regulated employees who work in hazardous situations or highly sensitive roles must submit to a urine drug test. Pre-employment drug testing is required of job candidates for the same security- and safety-sensitive occupations.

1. Drug tests before hiring

Pre-employment DOT drug testing is required of all applicants for safety-sensitive positions with businesses subject to FMCSA regulation before they can start working.

2. Post-accident drug tests

Post-accident drug testing will be necessary for employers covered by FMCSA under the following circumstances:

They should send the employee for testing right away and disclose their suspicions to them in private.

However, they should keep the employee from driving themselves to the testing location; instead, they should either drive them there or arrange for the test to be given there.

5. Return-to-duty drug testing

After an employee has refused a drug test or provided a positive result, the regulated employer must follow the return-to-duty procedure in order to reinstate them to their safety-sensitive position.

An alcohol and drug education and treatment program must be completed by the employee successfully and to the satisfaction of SAP approved by the DOT.

6. Follow-up drug testing

In the first 12 months after being reinstated to work following an RTD test, an employee is required to submit to a minimum of six follow-up drug tests.

The employee may be required to submit to follow-up drug tests in addition to any random or reasonable suspicion drug testing conducted within the same time frame.

What Happens If I Fail DOT Drug Test?

In accordance with DOT laws, your employer must immediately terminate your employment if you test positive for a DOT-required drug. Other negative effects could include losing your certification or license. A DOT-mandated worker in a position where safety is important must be relieved of their duties right away if they fail a test. Additional repercussions, such as having their license suspended, may occur depending on their position, the industry they work in, and any corporate standards they must adhere to.

The employee will have to finish a return-to-duty procedure in order to be qualified to resume their job. This includes a treatment and education program with a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) who is certified by the DOT, follow-up assessments, and more regular follow-up drug tests that need to come back negative.
