I really appreciate the instructors hard-working and efforts, but at the same time I have some complaints regarding the practice time, some got more practice time than the others that’s why the students that get less practice time they tend to fail on the test day. Some students after failing the first time they get scheduled for the next week, but some were scheduled for the next month. This school is not treating everyone equally, and they are discriminating between students.
The instructors were well experienced and informative but unfortunately not everyone received enough practice time (some get more chance and some got fewer, not fair and equal chance for everyone that led to failure on test day) the trucks are old and not properly functioning. But the thing that i hate it was after failing the first time I had to wait 30 days to test out again, not fair, not nice, not appropriating
Great instructors, shout out to Todd, Kirsten, John, and of course my man Lorenzo. They were all patient and actually cared. They have tons of experience. The facility is a little run-down, but if you put in the time and effort, you will get a CDL.
I signed up, paid the amount, then a week later some personal things came up and I couldn't attend the class and canceled that week. I tried to get my money back for 3 months and when they finally sent me a check it was for $800 less than what I paid. I called and they weren't about to help me out. Nothing but a bunch of theives in my book
I have thought about this review for a long time. Before I started training to get my CDL, I read many reviews here. I've read the reviews on the website. I went through months of training to get my CDL and I can surely say this is a good school. I wanted to give this place 4 stars, but there are some terrible reviews on here that aren't justified. Huge shoutout to Rachel, she was a huge help. The instructors here will not hold your hand it is up to you to succeed. If you have the time and effort to dedicate to a certification like this, this is a good place to attain it. This school is one of the only in the world left that teaches full manual truck driving, which in the US is one of the most difficult things to test for. Considering how affordable this school is, this is actually an amazing service. I can't emphasize enough how much you will have to do research outside of school and really learn this if you want to be successful. It seems like 10% of my classmates did not pass and I can almost guarantee every one of them failed to apply themselves. If you're patient and good at tests this is the place for you. If not, perhaps a different certification is in order. Also, a word of wisdom: Get your learners before even thinking about attending any school like this.
Shipper’s choice was a terrible experience for me the instructor quit the first day of class leaving the school with no other choice but to use someone who had never taught not to mention he was not DMV qualified. Secondly I was only able to drive on the road twice not enough behind the wheel time to prepare anyone for the actual test, Third after completing the 4 week course I was told I would be allowed to practice on the weekends to prepare for the DMV test but the school never had any available slots now I’m fighting a garnishment because of this terrible experience. I advise anyone seeking to obtain a Cdl to look elsewhere and save yourself the headache of dealing with this school and I didn’t even go into the terrible equipment that they used for training just not a good school please stay away!!!
My name is Jamar and I just finished my class this past Friday and I can honestly say that despite all the negative reviews, the issue normally lies with students who don't apply themselves, they're not going to treat you like a toddler , either you want it or you don't. The resources are there and they have lots of experienced instructors who are patient. The director Rob was very respectful and a good listener anytime I had a question Update: I passed my dmv exam and have been gainfully employed driving otr for several months now,
I was at shippers choice for 10 weekends, it was kind of hard, 19students in one class with one teacher Mr Lorenzo but he stood up he makes sure we get as much practice as possible all 19 of us finish that class perfect and ready only waiting on our exam date with dmv, Mr Lorenzo he’s the real g
If it wasn't for Wayne and smithy this school would be closed. It's a lack of order and professionalism.. we do not get enough time on the trucks practicing out backing maneuvers. With over flow of previous classes who graduated But is still testing.Smitty and Wayne are great teachers and I wouldn't have made it where I am now without them..but the school need more trucks and instructors .
This school is great I’m honest man. I don’t know about teachers they had before but I’m enrolled in school right now an Smitty Wayne an Rachel are the truth they love their job an it shows in their patience they have with us. They won’t let you give up when you down they form like voltrons an collectively get you where you need to be Rachel is great with pre-trip an her style of teaching easy to grasp, Wayne break it all the way down to smallest point an walk you up I’m talking meet you where you at an get where you need to be lady but not least Smitty great at what he does natural this his gift please take his 2% an put it with yr 98. Listen these teachers these three I seen with all nationalities they have heart of gold don’t get me wrong what energy you put out you will receive but if you want knowledge if you want protect yourself an others if you wanna be a professional driver you need RWS Rachel Wayne Smitty I can’t thank you all enough man from the heart y’all family to me now thank you.
Started and completed during covid. DMV delayed everything during that time. I enjoyed the classroom and field training. Instructors ask that you're off of your phone and pay attention (easy). Instructors are great too. Recruiter needs improvement..
First off, shout out to smitty , wayne and John. These instructors showed me how to control that truck. I learn something from all the instructors. On the real though, you have to really apply yourself if you want to get that Cdl. If you not hungry and putting in that work on your own you gone struggle. They gone give u the knowledge it’s up to you to apply it. The school do need to do better, they Jam Pack those weekend classes and it’s hard to get adequate truck time. They need better organization up in there for real.
School is a total rip-off. They had 2 trucks with 40 students all trying to learn driving. Then have students that already graduated coming back to practice before test. Be like 60 people waiting in line to practice driving when that happens.
Went to shippers choice in Newport News Mike and Steve were great instructors. You get out of it exactly what you put into it. I took my DMV test within 10 days of the class finishing. Got a perfect score had no problem passing my test and within a month of getting my license I was in my own truck. I would highly recommend this to anyone yes you have to take turns but that’s to be expected in any classroom environment. Great school and friendly staff.
I would not recommend this school. CDL school is to give a person the basic skills to pass the road test. You will get that here if your focus on that and only that. Do not allow the extras to get in your way. I attended the Newport News school in 2020. There safety measures are questionable. They harp on students standing next to the cones. They said this was due to covid procedures. As a prior instructor of driver training in the military. I would never put my students in potential harms way. Some people come to the school with very little driving experience. So having students stand by a cone and knowing a student driver is backing towards them is hazardous. Secondly Ed has an issue with talking disrespectful to students and trainers. During the summer when it's so hot out side there is no water on the range. So my suggestion bring enough water. They are not organized at all. They would put a student on the calendar and tell them thay will be coming in to drive knowing they don't have enough instructors to facilitate that. Then when asked instead of being honest and say so they will lie and say someone called in. Been there long enough to count all instructors and knew the only instructor that wasn't there was on his day off. Ask them why lie and they said they are told to.They can't keep instructors on payroll. They are always quitting. I even witness Ed firing a instructor and then drove up to Rob who was talking to me at the time. Ed in his vehicle was like you take over I just fired him. Unless it was an unsafe act I would of called him into the office. Not do that in front of a class. Matt and Rachel tend to be short with student and can come off rude.
