Safety Coalition urges DOT to make changes after hazardous materials spill

A group of truck safety advocates wrote a letter to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg urging him to take steps to prevent hazmat crashes and save lives. The letter called for automatic emergency braking on all commercial motor vehicles, hours-of-service rule reform, and opposition to anti-safety trucking legislation.

The letter was motivated by a recent train derailment in Ohio that spilled hazardous chemicals and revealed dangerous deficiencies in the rail and truck transportation of hazardous materials.

I think the Truck Safety Coalition is overreacting to one incident and trying to impose unnecessary regulations on the trucking industry. Automatic emergency braking could cause more problems than it solves, especially in bad weather or traffic conditions. Hours-of-service rules are already strict enough and limit our productivity and income. Anti-safety trucking legislation is a myth.

50 or 53 step deck

I've always wondered but never asked. Why are there 50 footers and 53 footers? Im guessing bridge laws in different states?

$1 million worth of marijuana found on a tractor-trailer

Border patrol officers seized over $1 million worth of marijuana found on a tractor-trailer crossing the border from Mexico recently.

The tractor-trailer was loaded with a shipment of uncoated paperboard and was referred for secondary inspection at the World Trade Bridge in Laredo, Texas. The officers discovered 454 pounds of alleged marijuana with a street value of $1,015,992 and CBP seized the narcotics.

I used to haul reefer-haz for a while. It was mostly food products that had some hazmat ingredients like alcohol, flavorings, additives, etc. It was not bad but it was also not great. You have to watch out for the reefer unit malfunctioning, the seals breaking, the load shifting, etc. And you have to follow all the hazmat rules and placards and inspections and whatnot. I switched to dry-haz and I’m happier now. Less stress and more money.

Tanker crash

Gasoline tanker truck flipped on I-5 near Lacey in the rain. One of the tankers ruptured and leaked its fuel. The other was intact and its contents were being moved to another truck. The truck driver and a passenger suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital.

Only one lane of I-5 was open for most of the day. Authorities advised travelers to stay away from the area, which is about 5 miles west of Olympia.

I go over 14 hours

I was almost done with my shift at a dock. When they were done, I had 8 minutes left and turned on PC to find a place to park. The first spot was full, so I decided to fill up. Then, because the truck was off and on, the logs switched the status to Driving without me noticing. When I got to a safe place 15 minutes later, I saw what had happened.

My company won’t edit the log and I can’t do it myself. So my question is, what will happen if I get stopped for a random inspection in the next few weeks? A fine, points on my license? Should I stop driving until my company agrees to fix the time? Any suggestions would be very helpful!
