What do truck drivers think of the Tesla semi truck?

Former OTR driver and trainer here… I think it’s brilliant, but I don’t expect the majority of truckers to think so. There’s something nice and macho about making the big rumbly noises with a diesel truck. However, I have started driving electric cars and I’ve seen the light!

“Each one would need to max out at about 100 kW, or about 400 amps at 240V” Which, for perspective, is twice the service my entire 2800 square foot house has. A relatively small truck stop, with 50 spaces, would then need 100 times as much power as my home, just to power the parking spaces. That’s… eye-opening.

Yes. IMO, the power requirements are likely the biggest obstacle to adoption. I believe Musk has some plans to add solar and PowerPacks to the Megacharger locations. Solar means more power on site as opposed to running new lines from a plant. PowerPacks allow for evening out the load and smoothing the peaks as well as storing solar energy for nighttime use. It's still going to be a difficult technical challenge, but history has shown us that Elon Musk doesn't shy away from such things!

It’d be nice not to need it, but it’d certainly be a bonus if you could pick up a Tesla trailer that has been sitting on a charger and be on your way.

It will be used for local runs, probably by companies from one of their locations to another. Where they have their own chargers.

It seems like Tesla could design a trailer to match with the truck. The trailer would contain a battery pack as well as the truck. Pick up a trailer, and you pick up a fully charged battery pack as well. No waiting around for charging.

Where to learn how to drive a truck?

Hello everyone, I've had experience only with small trucks like Chevrolet, Dodge, GMC etc. I really want to try massive one, but after I read some blogs and forums I've inderstood that it is not as simple as I imagine. Can someone suggest some good trucking schools? I'm pleased to hear any advices and tips. Thanks in advance.

Hi, for a safe drive of any vehicle need to get training. There are so many schools they provide driving training. If you want to go trucking school, you have to know first about the trucking industry and then know about the vehicle. In the USA, driving school provides driving training and also the courses. And also that for a new driver has to pass the DMV test and get the license.

You may also check with local vocational schools or community colleges in your area to see if they offer a CDL driver training program. You may also check with some of the carriers who train drivers. You can check the company listing on this website for more

Crete - What's the catch?

So I've been lurking for a couple of weeks, and want to go OTR (wife is of the 'ex' variety, kid lives w/her 300 miles away, no girlfriend, etc). And nearly unanimously, Crete is suggested. So what's the catch? Why are they paying more, and why are they in need of drivers? It doesn't look like they have a school, is that it? They don't have the big shiny ads in the magazines? Am I missing something?

Address on Medical Examiner's Certificate

I just realized after nearly a year of having moved away from Boston that my DOT Medical Card displays my old Boston address. Do I need to keep that address current? The certificate expires in a year.

I went through a DOT inspection once during my employment at Roehl and the inspector didn't seem to notice and/or care about the discrepancy between the addresses on my CDL which is current and that of my DOT medical card, which is not. Some companies actually let you use the one from the past. Usually a smaller company will do this. Not sure if it is the right thing to do but some have done this. The medical address means nothing! Only the drivers licences means anything and I am not sure on them laws so I won't even go there. I thought it was the state had to match the state you live in (this could be our company policy though). :?:

if he is going to a new employer, the new employer is I believe, actually required to have a DOT physical done at time of hire, regardless of the expiration date on his current med card. So the address issue would be a no issue, since a new med card would be issued. On the other hand, providing the current carriers records reflect his new/current address, then the address on the current med card need not reflect the correct address.
Hello

I wouldn't worry about that either. Simply explain that you moved to a different state...and had to switch to the new state of residence's CDL. If the DOT gets hairy about it.... your employer can set them straight.

I did 43 years and a little over 4 million miles. Mostly flat bed, heavy haul, drop deck. I traveled all over the lower 48 raised three kids, seven grandchildren with my o’l lady at the helm of our house. When I hung it up in 2019 I had been planning on retiring and slowing down. We sold our place and moved to the top of a mountain where I hike and work out in the morning ,then work in my wood/metal shop. We fish at the lake in the summer months and play in the snow with the grandkids in the winter. Do I miss the road? I would be lying if I said no, the wife says I shift gears all night long, I admit I dream about my trucking days most nights, although I wouldn’t ever want to get back in the seat.

At 37 I hope that in my mid 50s health insurance will be affordable enough (assumption that healthcare reform takes hold) so that I don't need to do full time work year round. At that point spend a season at a mountain town operating a shuttle bus, or doing hospitality/restaurant work with the occasional trucking gig. Worst case scenario would be in the trucking grind at 55 plus hours a week until I stroke out in my 60s.

Once I hit 50 I will hang up my keys for good. I’ll probably be in either the Philippines or Thailand living near a warm beach drinking cold beer with an 8 or 9 at my side. Living the good life lol.

Stop Overpaying for Cellphone service

Check this out guys 👇👇, I think you'll be interested. They have a good plan to offer.

This service runs off the T-Mobile Towers 4G and 5G They Support ESIM for instant service or they will mail you a regular Sim Card, they also support WIFI Calling so you never have a dead spot at home or anywhere you have WIFI. My wife uses this service and I will be switching myself as soon as my time runs out on my current provider. I stream talk radio all day over Bluetooth on my phone and never go over 6GB a month. There is no need to have a Unlimited data plan on your phone unless you live on Tik Tok or YouTube , if you only check Facebook, Twitter or normal websites on your phone you are wasting your money. You can thank me later.
