Driving a passenger car is easier than driving a truck because there are many nuances to it. Trucks are clumsy and heavy, and most accidents with them lead to terrible consequences. Naturally, the driver of the truck should be a professional so as not to create dangerous situations on the road. In order to adequately learn the theory of truck driving and good practice, it is necessary to apply to an official driving school. If you learn driving from ordinary drivers, then later you can make a lot of mistakes, which can cost the life of the driver and other people. That is why drive with a professional trainer.

Valuable tips

Successfully navigating all sections of the road depends on the skillful operation of all truck mechanisms.

It is recommended to read valuable tips that will help in driving alone:

  • If the truck is equipped with a trailer, you should start in first gear on hazardous sections. Dangerous sections include too-soft ground, washed-out areas, and snow.
  • You should always be predictable for the other participants on the road so that they do not make mistakes too. I recommend keeping the right distance, giving way, and making maneuvers if necessary.
  • The truck should brake smoothly, increasing the pressure on the pedal gradually.
  • It is dangerous to stop the car on the slope, so you should not do it. If it becomes necessary, you need to take all measures to ensure that the car does not roll down. To do this, engage the parking brake, put chocks under the wheels, turn off the fuel supply, and engage first gear.
  • Don't immediately go it alone. The last few months have been spent with a teacher seated next to you. Even if they didn't need to step in, that safety net was there, directing you in the right direction. After passing your test, make an effort to avoid taking your first few drives alone. Ask a parent or acquaintance with more driving experience to drive with you on a few short trips. Although they won't have the dual controls on their side of the vehicle, simply having a companion alongside you who is eager to offer guidance might ease first-time jitters.

Please, take into consideration weather conditions also. So be safe when you are driving alone without a trainer, and follow the tips mentioned above.

MAKE THE DREAM OF BECOMING AN OWNER/OPERATOR A REALITY Commercial
what are your guys thoughts on new driver employment contracts?

They want me to sign a one year contract. The contract is super simple, all it says is: "Our training costs ~$14,800, and we require you to complete 12 months of employment. If you do not complete 12 months of employment, we reserve the right to seek legal restitution for the cost of the program." Now I have no idea if I will want to compete a full year with this company or not. I'm curious how binding a contract like this really is, or if it is even lawful at all.

Do NOT sign yourself into ANY form of servitude. There are some MEGAs that do this too regarding leasing a truck. At the very minimum the contract won't say how many hours/miles/$ you are guaranteed in those 12 months so there are setting you up for failure.
Barney

I'm not sure if it is binding but I wouldn't sign it. Since you have your CDL you shouldn't have to sign a contract. Those that don't have a CDL shouldn't sign a contract saying they will owe $14000.

Most trainers are not good teachers. They opt into being a “trainer” for the extra pay. They are basically just baby sitters. Very normal to feel like you are learning much more on your own especially without the stress of being watched or stuck in a confined space with someone.

If a company is sponsoring my CDL

If a company is sponsoring my CDL, does that mean that they do the road test, or do I need to take it at the DMV? If I get my CDL in Florida, does that mean I can only get hired by a company that has a location here? Sorry for the questions, but Youtube and Google weren't being as clear as I needed.

You'll still need to take it at the DMV or licensing center, in every state I'm aware of. And no, if you have an interstate license you can work for companies regardless of their location. I got my CDL in PA, my first job was a company based in OK, next was IL, and current one is in OH.

I did the Swift Academy in Corsicana, TX, and we road tested with our instructors. They gave us like a document or something that we presented to the DMV that stated a certified instructor passed us, and we didn’t have to do it there. But of course that varies, so make sure you ask.
Krueger
Krueger
12.10.2022
Most places have their own DOT-certified testers. You can work in any state, usually. If you move out of FL and try to get a local position in a different state, some companies require a CDL from that state. Every state has different requirements for transferring a CDL so it can be a pain in the ass sometimes.

First and foremost, you must get a driver's license for the kind of vehicle you intend to use for delivery work. A regular but still valid driver's license will be taken into consideration for delivery driving employment if you plan to use a light goods vehicle truck for your deliveries.

However, if you want to drive a heavy goods vehicle truck, you must have a commercial driver's license. I would advise getting a state-issued ID card or a passport as a bare minimum, as you are legally obligated to provide evidence of identification to any new employment. A state ID can be obtained without a diving license.

To increase your work options, get your Class A CDL and, at the very least, the tanker endorsement. The hazmat and doubles/triples endorsements are advantages, however, the majority of trucking businesses that want these two endorsements also demand more years of experience.

Driving a commercial vehicle is the only experience that trucking firms would accept, with a preference for local or long-distance driving. There is absolutely no other option, but thankfully, many businesses recruit drivers with no prior experience.

The big tarp they have you lift is actually 120lbs. With a little practice I'm sure you could do it. Pulling yourself up onto the side of the trailer would probably be more challenging. I've heard of them letting really short people just climb onto the back of the trailer, but I'm not sure.

I am in Florida, and I went down to the DMV after 3 days of getting tested out and the DMV says they don't have any info on my license. The guy at the DMV asks me if I took the test on a manual or automatic. Doesn't the paperwork state which I took the test on, manual of automatic? Would like to say, "manual", even though I didn't. And yes, I have driven a manual for years but let my license expire.

I recently went through a CDL program with a smaller well-known company I've had my CDL before but back in 2003 I did not receive the proper training but the state of Texas went ahead and gave me my CDL fast forward to now 2022 small minor company put me through training I could not get my 90° back during my third and final practice CDL test and they let me go now I cannot find a job or a driving company that will hire me or train me to God at the company I worked with for two weeks and 3 days Told Me Maybe the program was too fast-paced for me and I needed more training for my 90° back mind you I've had my CDL was tinker and HazMat endorsement when I lived in Texas I've been in New York for 6 years now and I called and fill out applications for all the mega couriers to have page TV or training but none of them want anything to do with me I don't want to put the name of the company where I attended orientation training because they did what they could do I'm just wondering if anyone here has experienced anything like this and how did you overcome it and if anyone else has any of your ideas because I really would like to get back into driving a truck for a living ,

Don’t let the bumps in the road get you down. You’ve got the grit and the guts to have made it this far

You are going to have to complete behind-the-wheel training again before you will be able to re-test for your CDL. Your options would be to pay for the training yourself (not the best option) or find a company willing to hire you for CDL training. 4 companies that might be willing to bring you on for training are Dutch Maid Logistics, PAM Transport, Millis Transfer, and Witte Bros. I am not a 100% certain if Witte Bros and Millis Transfer hire drivers out of New York. I do know that Dutch Maid Logistics and PAM Transport do.

This is all over the place. Do you have a CDL? How long? Slow down and explain the 2003 to now. Just trying to make sense of this. Not trying to offend. If post was a little clearer you will get a lot of info on here to assist you.

I believe Millis will hire to train you if you meet the requirements. They have a school in Carlisle, Pa and drop yard in Baldwinsville, NY

Training simulator

The trucking school I'm going to wants to do almost all truck training in a simulator insted of on the road in a real tractor and trailer. What are your thoughts on this?

Sure, simulators are cool and all, but they can’t replicate the feel of a 10-speed under your boots or the smell of diesel in the mornin

Luckily they havent got the simulator yet and am doing all the training in a real semi. It was super hard at first because it was litterally my first ever time driving a semi and manual and we did all this on a public road with lots of parked cars.

Yeah...I would never attend a school that did that. I'm not even sure it meets the ELDT driving requirement.

I would not go to the school, you need real world experience

Do they actually say they are going to do virtual training almost exclusively? Or are they just saying they will have this to show you certain scenarios you can't replicate instantly on the road? Most of the mega carriers have these but it's just a short little run to show you some stuff you can really provide in an instant.
