I’m Not Gonna Let Some Fancy Computer Take My Place

stumbled on article "autonomous trucks" and how they’re supposed to revolutionize the transportation industry. I gotta say, I’m not buying it.

I think these self driving trucks are a bad idea and a threat to our profession and way of life. I don’t want to trust them and I don’t want them on the roads. I’m a truck driver and proud of it. I’m not gonna let some fancy computer make decisions on the road.

I agree with you. I like that technology is advancing so much, it has its advantages, but a lot of people will be out of work. There are all sorts of situations during transportation, and I'm not sure an autonomous truck could deal with it without us.

I don't see anything wrong with that. The industry is facing a serious driver shortage right now, and the introduction of autonomous trucks will only have a positive impact on the situation. It will be much faster and more efficient

There are pros and cons to this. Most of the accidents happen due to human factor, driver's mistakes and inattention and so on. But on the other hand, only an experienced driver can handle some difficulties on the roads.

Replacing drivers with autonomous trucks will lead to mass unemployment. Thousands of families will be left without an income, and no one cares. These changes only benefit some people and big companies.

Those who say that the driver сan make a mistake and the autonomous is not - this is complete nonsense! Technology also fails and we have witnessed it many times. What if there is an emergency on the road or just a road repair? How autonomous is gonna solve the problem?

This is a disaster for the industry. We're already losing jobs, losing control, and no one can guarantee that autonomous truck systems will work perfectly 100% of the time.

Imagine what a major breakthrough this would be in the industry! This would greatly improve efficiency. The driver can be tired, sick, sleepy, etc. A lot of accidents happen because of this. Yes, the truck can also have a technical failure, but this happens super rarely.

Of course it will have a negative impact on people, they will lose their jobs. But let's look on the bright side. It will reduce the number of accidents, it will help reduce delivery times. Maybe in time, transportation companies will find a solution that will help solve the problem of laying off drivers.

Ok, it will increase efficiency, but what about the loss of jobs for thousands of drivers? How many cdl schools will be closed due to this? It's basically the end for such a valuable profession.

Some see autonomous trucks as a huge advancement, others see them as a threat to jobs. Technology is always changing the labor market, but the question is how to adapt to this so that no one will be out of work. As a driver, I'm worried, because I've spent many years working for a transportation company.

I've been a driver for over 20 years. It's a difficult job at times, but I love it. I have seen different things on the roads, many unpredictable situations. And I am definitely convinced that only a person knows how to avoid that type of danger on the road.

The future of transport is gonna be interesting. Roads will be very safe once it’s all automated and managed by a central node that can plan every route , speed and direction to avoid or at least minimise congestion. But you can’t have human in the mix. We are way too random and chaotic.

I don't think we can avoid such major changes. I think drivers need to think about their future now, so that they don't get unemployed later. I quit my job a year ago, because I realized that big corporations will implement them sooner or later.

More trucks means more damage/road degradation, more traffic (which causes more pollution), and inflates the space needed for logistics and movement of goods.

I read that more than 1.5 million people will be out of work if companies still decide to make these changes. My husband has been a driver for over 30 years and he is proud of his job. I really hope that our government will take some measures to save this profession.

Stopping technical progress is stupid. The fact that we're automating jobs is great. It saves lives, saves the environment, makes our lives more pleasant But we'll have to adapt to a world where physical jobs are no longer necessary.

How do we know that autonomous trucks are much safer than drivers? All these statistics are useless, because there are still a lot of drivers on the road, and that's the only reason why the statistics are so positive.

Transportation company owners should think about why there is such a low demand for the profession. The answer is very simple. Most companies have abysmal working conditions. Low wages, not enough days off, difficult working hours. This is what needs to be worked on, not just replacing drivers.

I don't know how long we have until full implementation, but I think it's too late to fix it. Companies don't care how many people will be out of work, because they only think about how to increase their revenue and reduce their costs.

Personally, I doubt the reliability of autonomous vehicle technologies, the systems can fail in the most inappropriate situations. We don’t know how driverless trucks will behave in bad weather conditions, on slippery roads or in urban conditions with dense traffic. Yes, the driver is not perfect, but I trust them more.

Let's imagine a situation. There is an accident involving an unmanned truck. Who will be responsible for what happened? The main disadvantage of unmanned trucks is their high dependence on the internet and GPS systems. If communication fails, the autonomous system will be helpless, and the consequences can be unpredictable.

But in fact, the development of autonomous transport technologies will contribute to the creation of new jobs in the field of development and maintenance. That is, all the drivers who lost their jobs will be able to simply retrain and do maintenance.

I always see discussions on various forums about this topic. I think that fully autonomous vehicles in the near future is a pipe dream that will probably not happen in our lifetime. It's starting to look like the companies developing this technology haven't been able to deliver on their promises, and the investment funds are drying up.

The future is now! There are already automated trucks on the road in some European and I think Asian countries as well. They have limited use but the point is that just like so many other industries, they are looking to replace human workers for any number of reasons. Most of them financial.

I'm not a truck driver, but I really think autonomous trucks will make transportation a lot better. Self-driving cars have proven themselves to be substantially safer than human-driven vehicles. For examle: Tesla cars have been involved in just 6 fatal accidents over 2 billion miles driven on AutoPilot versus 12.5 fatal accidents per billion miles for human drivers.

We are far better than computers at jobs that require all senses or instincts. And if it ever gets to a point that computers out do us in those fields I’m afraid company have created a monster that we may soon realize does not need us anyway. Unfortunately some people dont take this situation serious.

Don't worry too much about this right now, autonomous trucks are still in the testing process. But of course it will be very profitable for companies: the shipping from one city to another would be at a low cost and on time, because the trucks would be running 24 hours a day without stopping for gas or food.

Сompany developers are working hard because they see how much money they can make. But, in reality, the developers have never been in a truck and have no clue about what the job entails. I believe completely autonomous trucks with no driver will never run on public roads.

Yes that is the goal. But it is still going to be a while before it fully takes place. The technology is here. But it is not 100 percent safe yet. The truck stops are already set up for them for fueling purposes. And they are being tested in the real world.

Come on, there is no reason for such panic. Professional truck drivers will retire, a few will pick other professions while they’re still young. This will happen organically, because autonomous vehicles won’t be the norm for all tasks starting now. They’ll take over the simple long haul routes first, then increasingly more complex city delivery ones. Truck drivers will still be around throughout, there will be just fewer of them.

It is obvious that a “self-driving” truck will need a driver. Even with all the sensors and technology in the world, it can’t really properly inspect itself. It can’t back up to a loading dock, and also it can’t fuel or recharge itself.

Personally, I don’t think it’s going to happen as soon as everyone is thinking or hoping. As a driver with a lot of experience, I know that my job is much more difficult than just driving a truck. The driver has to solve various problems on the roads or in warehouses, check and repair the truck’s faults, and so on.

AI is likely to replace truck drivers in the future, but i think human truck drivers will still be needed for some time. Autonomous trucks could be more efficient, safer, and less expensive to operate than standard ones. However, there are challenges that need to be addressed before AI can fully replace truck drivers. The timeline for the replacement of truck drivers by AI will depend on the development of AI technology, the cost of AI-powered trucks and the regulations.

Look. Have you ever thought about how many other professions have already disappeared or are on the verge of disappearing due to the development of technology? New technologies create new opportunities, new jobs. It hurts some people and helps others. The only thing that many need to understand is that the world has always been changing and will always be changing.

Of course, an autonomous truck can deliver cargo quickly and efficiently on the highway, but it's much more tricky on local roads. The driver can better navigate if there is ice on the roads or bad weather. I think it will take at least another 10 years to create the infrastructure and other conditions for this.

Usually if something is wrong with the truck, as a driver i can always get out and inspect the truck for some damage or leaking. Let's imagine that an autonomous truck has some kind of breakdown, the truck will simply stop driving, since there is no driver who could find the problem and solve it.

I think this topic does not need our comments. It will happen anyway, possibly in the very near future.
