For over 70 years, the Hummer name has been honored in transportation. Buck Hummer started his career by hauling livestock for farms, auctions, and packing plants in the Midwest. His son, Don Hummer, learned the trade from him and started his own business in 1975. He diversified his fleet by acquiring smaller trucking companies, building a reputation for quality service and a strong company culture.

Don hummer is a great place to work for last year I had lung cancer the company did what they could to help me and my family after I got healed up they hired me back thanks everyone at the office
A true OTRA company hires from all over. If they don't have freight in your area find out why. I applied and found out the have a VERY bad reputation in the southeast.
Aggressive Speeding driver, maintaining speeds over 74 mph in a well posted 45 mph construction zone. After the 45 mph construction zone, he maintained 70 mph in a well posted 55 mph speed limit.
The driver of the company was idiot, he doesn’t know how to drive, going back n forth ( speeding n breaking in front of us and wanted us to stop and fight). Called his company, drivers like him are very dangerous on the roads
if you're a driver? this is THE SPOT. everything about this company is class. flew me out to meet with company corporate. they were all awesome. seated in a 24 kenworth t680 (Cummins x15) have been moving non stop at a fantastic cpm. on top of all of this the trucks are governed at 70, no inward camera and no intrusive auto driving "safety features" you get fuel where and when you want. autonomy is huge here. home time is 12 on and 3 off. can't beat that. I'm honestly happier than I've ever been
Hello Hummer family just like to say thank you for the coffee I can't wait to try it it smells delicious my husband has been driving for the company for some time now through the changeover I believe he really enjoys driving for Hummer and the gift that you give to workers are awesome I think you guys are a great company to work for thanks again for all you do to keep the guys on the road. This company will straight up lie to you in your pre employment interview ..AVOID ! Also didn't reimburse me for my travel costs to cedar rapids . I stayed 7 days and on the 5 th day the story totally changed . I returned the truck to the terminal ..rented a car and went home ..total waste of time and middle finger at don hummer .
Don hummer Trucking ; Cedar Rapids, Iowa Overall, great company to drive for keep you busy dedicated runs, get you home very good equipment Great maintenance good people although none are perfect ; Romans 3:10 💜😊🙏🚛
I just started two months ago ,but I have been driving for almost 22 years. This is the best company I have ever worked for . No place is perfect yeah ,but this place is almost.
Driver on I-380 11/1/2022 showed total disregard to safety for others on the roadway. I was a few cars back but watched the driver Jump over 3 lanes without using any turning signals resulting in multiple vehicles having to slam on their brakes. Then the driver was unable to keep his rig in his own lane and tailgating other vehicles. When I went to take a picture of the cab of his truck he chose to give me the one finger salute. I’ve had my Class A CDL for almost 30 years now and this clown gives others a bad name. Made several attempts to report this driver ZERO RESULTS!!!
Great company which is another way of saying "great people!" If you're a great driver, go see them. If you have stuff that needs to be shipped, they're a great choice!
Over all Don Hummer Tucking is a amazing company to work for I really haven't found a problem with them so far. I have been here going on two years now and I was able to take a really vacation this year with my family for the very first time ever. I have always wanted to go on vacation but I wasn't able to with any other company I was with. There dispatchers are top notch in my book. Anytime I have had a problem with a load it was fixed as soon as possible that way I could get onto the the next load and get down the road. The shops are very friendly and will work with you to get your truck fixed as quickly as possible but they will as do it right not a quick fix and out the door like others have done that I have worked for. There terminal might be in Iowa but Everytime I have to go out there for something it's nice cause of them having a company car you can use to go to the store or just out to eat while your there. Like I said before Hummer is a amazing company and I would love to see all my driver friends over here with me someday. And I tell everyone that asked about Hummer it's a lovely place to work for you get the home time you want and they are very family oriented. Family comes first and formost in Don Hummers eyes and that's the way it should be everywhere. I hope this review helps someone come to Hummer but if not that's ok to. Good luck and be safe.
As a Don Hummer employee I can honestly say that Don Hummer Trucking is one of the best companies out there for drivers who want to be treated with respect. We are given great equipment to drive and we are treated like we matter. I have had family emergencies that required me to be home immediately , once while I was in Virginia, and everyone at Don Hummer Trucking worked to ensure that I made it home as quickly as possible to take care of my family and never once made me feel like I was asking too much of them. I am home every weekend and my time off requests are always honored. I would recommend Don Hummer Trucking to anyone who is looking for a driving career.
When I started with this company I had no or little experience as a driver, I went through the training phase, I was very pleased with the trainer Victor Lopez. And the training program the safety team, my DM, was very helpful to the rookie like me.The little experience of driving with other company and the owner operator I had was a joke. Don hummer gave me an opportunity to drive and become a professional driver. I really can go on and on about this company.,how good I feel about being with them. one thing I can say they take care of their trucks, they take care of their drivers , they don’t make us wait for preload ,if you’re not getting enough miles it’s not the Company fault, they keep you running.don’t think I could leave this company in search of more money. An excellent company to work for. very proud to be a Don Hummer, driver. thanks for the opportunity to be able to see from Rookie to professional driver. However I’m still the rookie ...
I've been trucking on and off for 34 years, consistently for 20. This company is the best company that I've had the pleasure to work for. Most companies say that they are family oriented and that the driver is the focus of the company, but Hummer IS the ONLY company that has proven this. Thank you to everyone at Don Hummer trucking. You ARE the best!!!!
They hired me with basically a year and a day experience. I have received great pay, very comfortable equipment, a terrific dispatcher, minimal downtime between loads usually I can keep rolling with no downtime. They have a great relationship with a lot of good customers so that means more freight for us drivers. If you're looking for a great company position give Hummer a call.
Hummer offers a great pay pkg that fits my needs. The Company offers competitive benefits and has a family feel to it, yet is still big enough for continuous work and good equipment. Management / Training are great. Its the kind of company, you can see yourself w for the long haul! ;-D
I spent. Almost exactly 11 months driving for Hummer. This short period was due to an opportunity to advance my driving career with another carrier. I loved every minute driving for Hummer. The staff, DM’s and fellow drivers are some of the best people I have met in the industry. Not only are YOU family but so are YOUR family members part of Hummer. Don’t get me wrong there are cons and areas that could be improved. But, the overall experience has been that of a team of friends working to build a better environment to satisfy and complement each other to better server the customer. I left Hummer with much fear over my new opportunity. It was very hard to trade this family enterprise for an unknown.
Pay is adaquate. Benefits are average. Equipment is good and very dependable. Driver managers are competent and dependable. The culture is very respectful like Ive never encountered. I can say they are trying many things to improve work environment.
What is the best part of working at the company? The solid direction the company is managed and true care for their employees. Good communication, steady work and state of the art equipment. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? The company isn’t stressful at all. The weather we confront, for example Wyoming in the winter, is ever changing accompanied with decisions to proceed What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Professional, family oriented and secure What is a typical day like for you at the company? Driving me shift, everything needed is communicated and 24 hour help is available for any reason.
Used to be a great place to work for but in the year and a half i was gone when i came back it wasn't so much of a family oriented company something changed not sure what but it is no longer a family oriented place its all about money now. Sad
What is the best part of working at the company? Best part of working for Hummer was the maintenance program and newer fleet of trucks. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Couldn’t get enough OTR miles so I switched to Dedicated. Got the miles dedicated but a lot of it was on the fly dispatching. Then the company not having your back when out on medical. Getting terminated when being out on medical What is the work environment and culture like at the company? You can bust your rear for them, not turn down loads and make impossible run’s possible. Then finding out they really don’t have your back. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Waiting for the correct load to cut which could change many times. I could run on average 10hr a day.
Great company. Great DM. Great equipment. Great shop. Clean terminals. Friendly staff. 68mph governor. Variety of pickup/delivery locations. Respectable pay + bonuses. No sitting (occasionally a customer will take all day to load/unload, but it's very rare & they compensate you for it.) 21 days out, or more if I want. Home time when & where I want it. Plenty of miles. I'd work here forever if they offered flatbed & Canada routes, or paid *just a little* better.
I enjoyed my 4 years at the company. Everyone was professional and friendly, and they kept me running but also gave me sufficient hometime. Everyone made me feel special, I was a person not just a truck number.
I would recommend the company to any truck driver. It's has a nice facility and the owner is hands on with his driver's and maintenance staff. The people in the office are kind, considerate and fair when it comes to a driver's needs.
When you leave you will get screwed. They jacked their family insurance policy up to almost 300 dollars a week. I turned in my notice because I couldn't afford to pay for that all told them I didn't want the insurance. I thought I was doing the right thing by giving a notice but because I worked some in January I was charged for 5 weeks of their high insurance which they take out of your check all at once. I called to find out why and was basically told because we can and its a final screw you for leaving. I asked what they would have charged me if I had called and said I'm done your truck is in the driveway come get it. Was told 500 dollars. I would have come out 900 dollars to the good if I had done that. So be warned they are a good place to work while you are there but once you decide to leave they are going to screw you over and will laugh about it when you talk to them
Don Hummer is a good company to drive for. They have consistent miles and pretty good pay. Safety is a top priority, and they do a great job maintaining equipment. All trucks are pretty new, and trailers are in good shape.
Dispatchers routinely require drivers to chase hours after initial 70. This result in a lot of wasted time and sitting when coupled with loading and unloading times. Told dispatch that I was willing to stay out longer if they would allow hours to reset. Dispatcher always wanted advance notice of an impending reset. (They can see driver hours of availability as well as the driver) I am Aware that due to customer service requirements, this is not always possible. Still, it was never allowed to happen even once except when a load cancelled. Those weeks chasing hours resulted in consistently low pay. 2 out of every 4 weeks. Better driver management will result in a much better company. The rest of the elements are there, Quality equipment and home time. I must however thank them for forcing me to realize there was no money in it. My current job pays 20% of load gross revenue. most runs are under 500 mi. and I currently take home more than $1,000 a week. Every week, and home three days a week. I am just a driver, not an owner/ operator! Not even close at Hummer
Good place to work. Nice dispatch good equipment. I had no problem with the company. No sitting for long period waiting for reload. All and all nice places.
worked there 6 years ,then I got colon cancer and had to be off to beat it when I beat the cancer I was informed that my job was no longer available . Felt like I had been stabbed in the back ,I loved working for this company and I never turned down a load. I had an excellent on time record but I was treated like I had become a feeble old man. very disappointed in the management.
This was my second time working for them, really disappointed with Dispatch Manager and Planners. Worked for the first month, it was great. Got changed to a new DM and things went downhill. Request different DM, they said give me a little time. A month later still no change, so disappointed in all of this, drive time management on their end is terrible. Four hundred miles, three days. My income dropped to half after second month. No miles when I stayed out 3 to 4 weeks, should have been able to get in 2500 a week, instead I have less then 2000 a week. Not sure if it's the DM or the planners.
Bad pay, poor miles Terrible loads. If you're used to an APU then stay away from this company. Their equipment is nice, so the e-log system is the usual old Qualcomm that is not very good.
Orientation staff are stellar. Everyone knows who you are. The miles were not enough for me to balance things out despite being out 3wks+. But great for others who live either in proximity to, or in Iowa.
