Team truck drivers typically travel a great distance over a period of days or even weeks while sharing driving shifts with another driver. Discover the benefits and drawbacks of working as a team truck driver, how to become one, and which firms hire for these roles.
Driving a truck as a team involves up to four drivers, though most often simply two. When you drive a truck alone, you are working alone; but, when you share the driving with another driver, you will alternate shifts, often lasting 10 to 11 hours. This enables the truck to continue rolling while the drivers rest, delivering a cargo to its destination.
Team drivers may be preferred by some trucking businesses, especially those handling very long haul or priority shipments since their load can get there more quickly. The Hours of Service (HOS) regulations require that a single driver stop after a predetermined number of driving hours. However, while driving as a team, there is always a backup driver available to take over if one needs to take a break. Many Georgia OTR truck driving jobs can be found here.
Over-the-road (OTR) or regional roles make up the bulk of team driving positions. An ideal rotation or driving schedule can be established by you and your teammate. The other team member may relax, sleep, or perform other tasks while one person drives for the predetermined amount of hours or kilometers.
Instead of being paid by hour or shift, team truck drivers are typically compensated per mile. The final salary for team truck drivers may be fairly substantial because they frequently travel great distances. However, keep in mind that it must be divided, so the compensation for team truck driving isn't always more than for solo truck driving.
