Not very responsive and won’t tell a person why with 20+ years experience, why they aren’t qualified to drive for them. They just don’t call you back. You have to call them and get the run around. Not professional at all. Best of luck in the future Western Dairy.

This job is straightforward: pick up an empty trailer in San Antonio, TX, drive to Stephenville, TX, and return with a loaded trailer! The ride out to Stephenville can be monotonous depending on your start time. I would definitely consider working for WDT again!

I’ve been with WDT for nearly a year. Their equipment is reliable, and dispatchers are accommodating. However, the pay is lower compared to industry standards. As the title suggests, it’s a decent place to begin a driving career.

The pay is not as advertised, and work is inconsistent, leaving you to wonder how they stay afloat. Overall, this company might work for single individuals with minimal financial responsibilities and no dependents.

What is the best part of working at the company? Good equipment. Trucks included small sleepers, which provided a place for power naps during extended downtime—even though overnight stays were rare. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Management adding extra tasks at the end of the day. When asked to exceed the 70-hour legal limit, I refused, parked the truck, and said goodbye. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? They attempt to maintain a friendly environment with small celebrations and parties. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Early start, working independently, constant activity followed by waiting, and hoping management doesn’t assign additional tasks before your day ends.

What is the best part of working at the company? Excellent equipment, either brand new or in near-new condition. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Office staff frequently meddles. If someone in the office takes offense to a misunderstanding, the entire office may turn against you. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Cool, as long as you avoid upsetting the office management. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Great, as interaction was limited to dairy farmers, who appreciated smooth pickups—just like I did.

An excellent place to start if you don’t yet have your CDL. They pay you during training and provide all necessary resources to succeed. After earning your CDL, you may be assigned local or shuttle runs to build confidence and skill.

Paying 53 cents per mile isn’t bad, but there aren’t enough miles to make it worthwhile. Their payment structure is flawed—they should switch to bi-weekly pay. Dispatchers vary; some are okay, while others are unimpressive.

What is the best part of working at the company? Random company gifts. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Constant equipment breakdowns, unhelpful dispatch, frequent struggles to secure loads, and excessive favoritism. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Stressful if you’re not among the favored employees. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Erratic, long hours. Waiting for loads, unsure when the day starts—sometimes delayed past your shift start. Daily schedules are unpredictable.

I’ve worked for WDT as a driver for over 11 years. Management genuinely cares about the well-being of drivers and employees. Compared to other companies, Western Dairy stands out as the best. They offer competitive pay, excellent benefits, and no struggles for home time.

It’s a good starting point for your career. You can obtain your CDL license through them and gain experience driving to Houston or Dallas. New drivers benefit from backup practice, but the switch from load-based to hourly pay reduced earnings. Trucks operate on a first-come-first-serve basis, leading to hours of waiting unless you’re there early. Preventive maintenance only occurs in Stephenville, which causes delays when trucks need repairs or servicing.

A decent place to start and obtain your CDL. Plenty of hours are available, which is the job’s biggest strength. Pay is low, and some drivers complain excessively. Management and dispatch are cooperative as long as you communicate well. Communication is essential here, as it sets you apart in an environment where it’s often lacking.

Pay and benefits aren’t worth staying. New hires must work overnight shifts for at least a year and can only switch to days if there’s an opening. No overtime, and pay is incredibly low—even after working 70 hours weekly, financial struggles remain, especially for single-income households with children. Efforts to improve pay yielded only an 8-cent raise, with management claiming it was the best they could offer. Dispatch resembles junior high, rife with rumors, gossip, and favoritism.

Poor management and dispatch have strained relationships with drivers. Expectations are unclear due to a lack of company-wide meetings or safety training. Drivers face inconsistent training and leave feeling unprepared and lacking confidence.

The company culture is generally good. However, local management often seems unaware of corporate procedures. Hourly pay is offered, but no overtime—disappointing, especially for 60-hour workweeks.

WDT is one of the few remaining companies where employees might work for 20 years and retire—a rarity today. Drivers are typically professional and punctual, though some outliers exist. Management is supportive as long as employees perform their duties and adhere to guidelines. The company also offers training schools in various locations. I would consider WDT for future employment if I needed to relocate.

Western Dairy pays straight time—working 70 hours per week at $20/hour equals $1,400, instead of overtime pay for the hours worked beyond 40.

I thoroughly enjoyed the job—it wasn’t hard, and both the pay and coworkers were decent. However, the mechanics were the only issue I encountered. While WDT prioritizes safety, the mechanics often refuse to assist drivers outside their scheduled hours, leaving night-shift drivers unsupported. A 24-hour shop would address these issues, ensuring safety remains the top priority. Otherwise, this is an excellent job.

For new truckers with a fresh CDL, this is an acceptable starting point but not suitable for long-term employment. Drivers rank low among priorities, followed by safety and equipment. Trucks frequently break down, requiring extended waits for repairs, and schedules are dictated by vehicle availability.

Like most companies, WDT has both strengths and weaknesses. It’s a solid stepping stone to begin a career with opportunities for advancement. However, weather-related stoppages come with no compensation, which discourages drivers. Implementing per-diem or offering loading/unloading pay could help retain more drivers. Detention pay should start immediately, and hourly drivers should receive overtime pay.
