Rescuers were called to the AmeriTies West plant, situated at 100 Tie Plant Road, following a report of flames received by 911 dispatch at 8pm. The situation escalated when about half an hour later there was an explosion in a copper naphthene diesel drum that had long been unused and was standing empty.
The US Environmental Protection Agency classifies the preservative as a pesticide of general use because of its low hazard, according to the Internet. Sadly, a pair of rescue workers were injured in the blast, but are reportedly in stable condition at Mid-Columbia Medical Center.
Multiple blaze departments arrived on the scene, including Fire Engine 21 and 22, EMTs 22 and 23, Fire Engine 635 from Dallesport, the Dalles City Police and the Wasco County Sheriff's Office.
According to a local news agency, although the blaze has been extinguished, responders are on the scene to prevent additional flames.
The incident at the AmeriTies West plant highlights the importance of adhering to safety protocols and regularly inspecting and maintaining equipment, even when it is out of service.
