The incident unfolded at approximately 3 p.m. on Tuesday, drawing the attention of Portland Fire Rescue and Gresham Fire and Emergency Services. Numerous witnesses driving by reported seeing smoke emanating from what appeared to be an apartment complex. Upon arrival, the first truck on the scene identified the structure as an office complex with visible smoke and flames at the front of the building.
Swiftly, fire crews initiated a thorough search of the premises, ensuring that no individuals were trapped inside. Subsequent interviews with the building owner and supervisor confirmed that the establishment was presently unoccupied. As firefighters delved deeper into the building, they discovered flames on both the lowest floor and second level, prompting the escalation to a second alarm as the fire began to spread to the attic. Once a comprehensive search for any potential occupants had been conducted, firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze on the lower level. Shortly after, they managed to quell the flames on the second level and attic space.
The arduous battle against the inferno lasted approximately 20 minutes, with firefighters finally achieving full extinguishment after 30 minutes. Their swift and efficient response prevented further damage and ensured the safety of nearby structures and residents. Authorities are now launching an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, aiming to shed light on this alarming incident in the Hazelwood neighborhood.
