The Teutopolis Fire Department reports that two major truck collisions have occurred on a notorious stretch of I-70 in Illinois in just two days.
The latest incident occurred shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday, July 13, on eastbound I-70 at mile marker 102 in an ongoing construction zone near Teutopolis. Three semi-trucks were involved in this crash, fortunately, there were no fatalities or serious injuries. However, the Illinois State Police (ISP) has taken it upon themselves to investigate the cause of this disturbing collision.
Notably, this accident comes after a more serious incident that occurred just one day earlier in the same neighborhood. On Wednesday, July 12, at approximately 3:30 p.m., authorities were dispatched to eastbound I-70 near the 101.5 mile marker where a fiery crash involving five semi-trucks occurred in a construction zone. According to ISP, during the collision, one of the trucks went over a concrete barrier and into the oncoming lane of traffic. As a result of the accident, one person was taken to the hospital for medical attention. The causes of this accident are still under investigation.
Adding to the unfortunate events on I-70 in Illinois this week was a tragic collision that occurred westbound at the entrance to the Silver Lake Recreation Area at mile marker 27 in Madison County. A Greyhound passenger bus collided with three trucks, killing three people and injuring more than a dozen others.
The collisions between the trucks and the bus have raised safety concerns along this stretch of I-70 in Illinois. Authorities are stepping up efforts to investigate the causes of these crashes in an effort to identify and address all potential hazards to prevent further tragedies on this busy highway.
