Scott's law says drivers should decrease speed and yield the road when coming towards an emergency car or any cars with special lamps burning. In 2023, the ISP recorded eight accidents violating Move Over act, while last year there were 23 such violations and eight police officers were injured as a result of these accidents.
A violation of Scott's act could result in a fine of $250 to $10,000 for a first offense. Chauffeurs must obey speed limits and give way to ambulances. In cases where it is not possible to give way, other vehicles must be signaled to leave room to pull out.
The act is designed to protect emergency workers and other motorists, and failure to comply could have disastrous consequences.
In conclusion, the recent accident involving an ISP employee serves as a reminder of the importance of complying with Scott's Law. Chauffeurs should be aware of the requirements of the act and take the necessary precautions when approaching an emergency vehicle or any vehicle with emergency or crash lights on.
By complying with Scott's Law, drivers can ensure the safety of emergency personnel and other motorists on the road.
