A tragic accident occurred on Route 24 in Massachusetts early Saturday morning, resulting in the death of a 30-year-old man. Richard Maurice, a resident of Randolph, was identified as the victim of the collision between his 2020 Toyota Camry and a 2018 Freightliner semi truck. The crash took place around 2:25 a.m. on Route 24 south in Avon.
According to investigators, Maurice was driving in the middle lane when his vehicle rear-ended the semi truck, which was not pulling a trailer at the time. The impact caused Maurice's car to veer off the highway and into the median, where it caught fire. The semi truck, meanwhile, veered to the right side of the highway and collided with the guardrail.
First responders were able to remove Maurice from his vehicle before it became engulfed in flames. He was treated at the scene by state police troopers, Avon firefighters, and paramedics before being transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the Freightliner, a 44-year-old man from New Bedford, suffered minor injuries in the crash and was also taken to Good Samaritan Hospital by ambulance. The collision resulted in the closure of all three lanes on Route 24 south in the vicinity of the accident for just over three hours, causing traffic delays and inconvenience for motorists.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safe driving practices and vigilance on the roadways. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision and urge anyone with information to come forward. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Richard Maurice during this difficult time.
