A Dallas family has taken legal action against trucking company MK & SK Logistics by filing a federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. The family was involved in a harrowing incident while driving on the interstate through Colorado City, during which a truck operated by the company collided with their vehicle at a high rate of speed, causing it to overturn.
MK & SK Logistics, a company based in North Carolina, specializes in the transportation of general cargo, household goods, and building materials. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) reports indicate that drivers employed by MK & SK Logistics have been involved in a total of two accidents within the past two years. An attorney representing the injured family members highlighted the long-term health complications that two members of the family are now facing as a direct result of their injuries sustained in the accident. Seeking compensation for medical expenses exceeding $75,000, the family asserts that MK & SK Logistics should be held accountable for their role in the traumatic incident.
In a recent development in Minnesota, a new law has been passed which will result in a substantial increase in taxes on diesel, gasoline, and biodiesel starting in January 2025. This tax hike, totaling almost 12%, is expected to bring in an additional $1,000,000 in revenue for the state within one year. The state's transportation department has outlined plans to utilize these funds for the construction of highways and the implementation of various transportation projects. Starting from January 1, the tax per gallon of fuel will rise from the current rate of 28.5 to 31.8 for diesel, gasoline, and biofuels. Additionally, the tax on ethanol per gallon will climb from 20.25 to 22.59.
This decision comes at a time when the cost of highway construction has seen a significant increase, impacting the efficacy of bipartisan infrastructure funds earmarked by the transportation department. The U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics determines the National Highway Construction Cost Index by examining successful bids for highway construction projects across states, taking into account price quotations for key components such as materials and labor.
In a recent incident at the United States-Mexico border, a 29-year-old truck driver was apprehended by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents in Southern California. The driver, who was transporting watermelons, was found to be concealing 1,220 packages of methamphetamine within the fruit, disguised in paper wrapping. The total weight of the illicit substances amounted to nearly 4,600 pounds, with an estimated value exceeding $5 million.
Following the discovery, the truck and its contents underwent further investigation, and the individual was taken into custody by Homeland Security Investigations. With authorities seizing 146,000 pounds of methamphetamine in the first half of 2024 alone, surpassing the total amount confiscated in the entirety of the previous year (140,000 pounds), efforts to combat the illegal drug trade remain a top priority for law enforcement agencies.
