A citizen from Nevada, has been apprehended Tuesday after he was caught with coke and cash in his car on Interstate 65 near Seymour, according to Indiana State Police officials. Officers pulled over an off-road car driving southbound just north of the Seymour exit around midnight and became concerned when his service dog detected the smell of narcotics in the car.

On inspecting the vehicle, officers found two kilograms of coke and around $8,000 in currency. Experts estimate the market price of the narcotics to be around $50,000. As a result, Jonathan Carrillo, 27, was taken into custody on provisional charges of selling and possessing cocaine, as well as driving with no license.

Using trained canine to detect illegal substances, such as the police canine which detected the smell of coke in Carrillo's car, highlights the effectiveness of using animals in law enforcement. Police dogs are specially trained to detect certain odors , including the smell of drugs, and their abilities can be very important in detecting illegal activity.

Carrillo's arrest on cocaine charges is a reminder of the importance of law enforcement efforts to combat drug trafficking. Seizing drugs, money and an SUV is an important step in reducing the supply of drugs on the streets and preventing the harm they cause.
