Illinois State Police (ISP) have released new details on the deadly pileup crash that occurred on May 1 on I-55 in Montgomery County. The number of fatalities has increased from 6 to 7, according to a May 2 press release by ISP. Officials are still trying to identify all the deceased.

The pileup occurred on both the northbound and southbound lanes of I-55 between milepost 72 and 78 near Farmersville. A total of 72 cars were in the incident, with 37 people hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to critical.

ISP attributed the cause of the crash to excessive winds blowing dirt from farm fields across the highway, leading to 0 vision. The severity of the crash was such that it had masked the remains, and what was previously believed to be the remains of one individual was found to be two individuals. On Tuesday, May 2, ISP reopened I-55 in the morning, but later temporarily closed both directions of the interstate again due to another dust storm causing poor visibility conditions. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

The tragic incident on I-55 serves as a reminder of the importance of exercising caution while driving, especially during inclement weather conditions.

It is essential to stay alert, reduce speed, and maintain a safe distance between vehicles while on the road. It is also crucial to ensure that vehicles are properly maintained, and that drivers are well-rested and focused while behind the wheel. By taking these precautions, we can help prevent accidents and keep our roads safe for everyone.
