In Minnesota, 55-year-old truck driver Joe Grimes has been charged in the deaths of two people. The truck driver was watching a show on Netflix while driving, leading to the accident.
Grimes was driving close to a construction zone on Interstate 35 near Faribault when his semi struck a Toyota Camry and a Chevrolet pickup pulling a flatbed trailer. The Camry was crushed in the collision and fell into a ditch. Joe Grimes denies that he was distracted while driving by his phone. He assured police officers that he had downloaded the show on Netflix to his phone beforehand and planned to watch it later. But after reviewing DVR and roadside camera data, police were convinced that Grimes was indeed constantly distracted by his phone when the crash occurred.
There were two victims in the Camry, a man and a woman in their 50s. According to the police report, the couple were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. The woman died immediately at the scene, the man had a very weak pulse when he was discovered by police. An ambulance was not able to save the man's life in time. The driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck suffered minor injuries.
Police immediately denied the theory that Grimes' car had any mechanical problems. Weather conditions were also not a factor in the accident, as the weather was sunny and dry that day. The court hearing for Joe Grimes will be held on May 15.
