In the early hours of Monday morning, a devastating three-alarm fire ravaged a vacant home in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Portland. At approximately 2:30 a.m., Portland Fire Rescue received a distress call and promptly responded to the scene at Southeast 34th Avenue and Southeast Washington Street. Upon arrival, firefighters were met with a harrowing sight a two-story vacant home was engulfed in flames. Despite their best efforts, the fire quickly spread, and a third alarm was called to bring in additional resources. As a result of the blaze, multiple power lines were down, leaving several Portland General Electric customers without power. According to PGE’s website, about 32 customers were still without power around 5 a.m.

The fire was finally extinguished by 3:45 a.m., but crews remained on scene throughout the morning to work on any hot spots. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported at this time. The aftermath of the fire was devastating, leaving behind a shell of what was once a home on SE 35th Ave near Washington St. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but an investigator has responded to the scene to determine the cause of the blaze.
As the community mourns the loss of this home, it serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety and preparedness. While it is unclear what caused this particular fire, it is imperative that individuals take steps to protect themselves and their homes from potential fires. This includes having working smoke detectors, creating and practicing an evacuation plan, and ensuring that all electrical systems are up to code.
