An arrest had been made in connection with a devastating apartment blaze that occurred in Portland last week. Portland officers indicted Garrett A. Repp, a 30-year-old occupant of the May Apartments, with several counts of arson and other crimes. The May 20 blaze killed up to 100 persons and blocked road traffic in central Portland for the day. Investigators began looking into the cause of the fire a week later, and Repp was taken into custody Thursday night. Repp was taken to the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of first-degree arson (2 counts), recklessly endangering another man (18 counts) and criminal injury in the 1st degree (11 counts).

He was due to appear in court Friday morning. According to court papers, Repp was in the midst of being evicted from the house when the blaze broke out. It is unclear at this time what caused the fire. Repp's arrest brought some relief to the residents of the May Apartments, who struggled to find temporary housing and get back on their feet after the fire. However, it will take a long time to repair the damage caused by the fire, and many residents may never fully recover from the trauma of the fire. This incident also raised the issue of apartment complex safety and the need for stricter regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future. We hope that justice will be served in this case and steps will be taken to ensure that all Portlanders can live in safety and tranquility.
