At least 8 kids required health checks Wednesday morning after potentially chewing marijuana-laced chewing gum at Sun Valley Magnet School in California, according to authorities. The accident was recorded at noon at the school. The victims were teenagers and were being tested for a spontaneous illness after chewing gum. Fortunately, all the children were awake and respiring, but 5 were transported to hospital for more medical care, while 3 were let go to their families.
The ages of the children involved in the incident range from 12 to 16, and although they were found ill on school grounds, it remains uncertain whether they are students. LAUSD officials have not yet confirmed their belonging to the school. Air footage taken by KTLA TV showed several fire trucks arriving at the site.
The incident raises concerns about the growing prevalence of edible marijuana products in places accessible to children. Easy access to cannabis-infused products poses a danger, especially for young and unsuspecting children.
It is crucial for parents, guardians and educators to remain vigilant and ensure that children do not have access to these products, as accidents can have serious health consequences. While it is not yet clear how the children in this incident gained access to marijuana chewing gum, it serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible use and storage of such products.
