A deadly fire broke out Wednesday afternoon in Dulles, Oregon, destroying three homes and causing significant damage to several other structures in the Columbia View Heights neighborhood. The fire, known as the Mile Post 87 Fire, started around 5:00 p.m. local time in grass and brush near Interstate 87 on Interstate 84. Dulles police determined that strong winds quickly spread the flames up the hill toward a residential area.

The Wasco County Sheriff's Office confirmed Thursday that one brick-monolithic home and two mobile homes were destroyed, and one mobile home, one outbuilding and two pumping stations were damaged by the fire. Authorities issued third- and second-level evacuation notices, and by 11:40 a.m. Thursday, the third-level evacuation had been reduced to second-level. The Red Cross set up a shelter at Gateway Presbyterian Church, which has since been closed. However, those affected by the fire can still seek help by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

As of Thursday morning, the fire was reportedly 40 percent contained, although the Wasco County Sheriff's Office has not provided an update on the fire area. As of Wednesday night, the fire was about 150 acres in size. Fortunately, no injuries have yet been reported, but the cause of the fire remains unknown.

Local officials urged residents to exercise caution and remain vigilant, especially during dry and windy conditions that increase the risk of wildfires in the region. They also stressed the importance of following evacuation orders in a timely manner to ensure their safety.

The Mile Post 87 fire is the latest in a series of wildfires that have plagued the Pacific Northwest in recent years. Climate change has exacerbated drought conditions, leading to a longer and more intense wildfire season. The Oregon Department of Forestry is working closely with local authorities to determine the cause of the fire and prevent further loss of life and property.

Residents of The Dalles and surrounding areas expressed their gratitude to the first responders who worked tirelessly to contain the fire and protect their homes. The community rallied to support those affected by the fire by offering food, shelter and other forms of assistance. While the investigation continues, local officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and keep abreast of all developments related to the Mile 87 fire.
