A tragic accident occurred Wednesday in Yankton, South Dakota, when a police pursuit ended in a double fatality collision. According to the Yankton County Sheriff's Office (YCSO), the incident began around 10 a.m. May 10 when the South Dakota Highway Patrol (SDHP) tried to stop a red Chevrolet driving eastbound on Highway 50 for speeding at 100 mph and driving carelessly. Despite SDHP's attempts to stop the vehicle, the driver of the Chevrolet refused to comply, and a pursuit began, continuing eastbound on Highway 50.

The situation quickly escalated, and near the Yankton city limits, the Chevrolet collided at high speed with a semi-truck, resulting in a fatal crash. Tragically, two occupants of the Chevrolet died at the scene, and a third was taken to the hospital with wounds incompatible with life. The Yankton County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating the incident, and at this time it is unclear what caused the driver of the Chevrolet to engage in such reckless behavior.

It is important to remember that reckless driving can have severe and often fatal consequences, and the safety of ourselves and others on the road should always be our top priority. A bystander filmed and posted a video of the collision that ended the police chase, which serves as a reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of safe driving.

It is imperative to remain vigilant on the road and prioritize safety over speed or other distractions. Let's honor those who lost their lives in this tragic incident by committing to responsible and safe driving.
