Authorities shut down I-55 south of Springfield, Illinois, Monday because of a dust storm and a major crash with injuries. Illinois State Police said I-55 is closed in both directions from mile marker 52 to mile marker 80, and that officers are currently working on a "major" accident on I-55 southbound and northbound from mile marker 63 to mile marker 80. The incident occurred during a reported dust storm in the area.

We took this video from FOX 32 Chicago YouTube Channel.

Pictures taken at the scene show dozens of smashed vehicles, underscoring the seriousness of the incident. It is not yet clear how many vehicles were involved in the accident or how many people were injured. Illinois State Police have not provided any further information about the incident at this time.

The closure of I-55 has caused significant traffic congestion in the area, and drivers are advised to seek alternate routes until the highway is reopened. The Illinois Department of Transportation is working to clear the roadway as quickly as possible and restore traffic flow.

The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of driving in difficult weather conditions such as dust storms. Drivers are advised to use caution and reduce speed when driving in inclement weather, and to be prepared to pull over and wait out the storm if necessary. This story is a work in progress and we will provide more info as it becomes available. Watch the video below to see the aftermath of the accident.
