There was a dramatic police pursuit in Milwaukee on Friday, which began after a person reportedly stole an Amazon van. The van chauffeur flew over a kerb and grass, and the officers chasing him rushed after him. The chase eventually came to a halt on a nearby road.
Footage from the BP petrol station at 27th and St Paul captured the moment the van stopped and was immediately surrounded by cops. The 32-year-old male was apprehended at the scene, but the ordeal actually began a few miles from here, close to 65th Street and Lancaster, at about 1:30 p.m.
According to Milwaukee police, the suspect threatened an Amazon employee to gain access to the van. A bystander at the scene reported that the perpetrator first attempted to break into her own vehicle before heading towards Amazon's truck.
The incident shocked locals, especially in light of the tragic death of postal courier Aundre Cross, who was murdered just one blink away from the Amazon truck hijacking site shortly before New Year. A monument to Cross still stands in the area.
One resident, who relocated to the street with his fam a year back, regretted the decision in light of recent events. Similar incidents involving hijacked Amazon vans have occurred in US cities in recent years.
