On Friday morning, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) reported a serious accident involving multiple commercial vehicles on the westbound lanes of I-70 at mile marker 178, east of Vail. Images shared by CDOT and the Colorado State Police show multiple semi-trucks severely damaged on the highway.
As of now, there is no estimated time for the reopening of the westbound lanes of I-70. Officials have not yet released any information about how many vehicles were involved, how the crash occurred, or if there were any injuries.
CDOT is advising westbound travelers to take an alternate route at Copper Mountain by exiting I-70 at Exit 195 and traveling south on CO 91 to Leadville, then west on US 24 to Minturn/Eagle and I-70. The crash has caused significant disruption and concern among local residents and authorities, who are urging drivers to take extra precautions when driving on the highway, especially during poor weather conditions.
The incident has also raised questions about the safety of commercial vehicles on highways, and whether stricter regulations and enforcement are necessary to prevent such accidents from occurring in the future.
As the investigation into the cause of the crash continues, CDOT is reminding drivers to exercise caution and follow all traffic laws to ensure the safety of all travelers on Colorado's highways.
