A tragic accident claimed the life of a pilot car driver on Tuesday morning in Johnston County, North Carolina. According to reports, the driver, identified as Roy Ward, was struck and killed by a semi truck while walking to check on the rig he was guiding. The incident occurred just before 8:30 a.m. on Interstate 40.

Ward was driving a pilot car when the truck he was guiding pulled over onto the shoulder of I-40 west. He then pulled over his own car and got out to check on the parked truck. Unfortunately, a second semi truck moved from the left lane to the right lane, striking the parked rig and Ward in the process. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and no other injuries were reported.
One of the truck drivers was seen leaving the scene in a pickup, and the authorities are currently investigating the incident to determine the cause of the accident. No information on potential citations has been released at this time.
