Former Honduran president sentenced to 45 years

Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández has been sentenced to 45 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of collaborating with drug traffickers and accepting bribes. Hernández, who served two terms as the leader of Honduras, was arrested immediately after leaving office in 2022 and extradited to the United States.

According to U.S. prosecutors, Hernández accepted bribes from drug traffickers as far back as 2004 and played a role in the shipment of over 400 tons of cocaine into the United States. Despite denying any involvement in drug trafficking, witnesses at the trial testified that Hernández defended and worked closely with powerful cocaine traffickers, including Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán. Witnesses also noted that Hernández contributed to many murders during his political career.

US approves new $360 million arms sale to Taiwan

The Biden administration has recently authorized a $360 million arms sale to Taiwan in response to escalating tensions with China. The sale includes a significant number of drones and missile equipment, aimed at bolstering Taiwan's security and preserving its military equilibrium.

A senior official within the Biden administration emphasized the importance of this arms sale in safeguarding Taiwan's sovereignty and stability. The administration remains committed to supporting Taiwan through military acquisitions, underscoring its dedication to upholding Taiwan's independence. This recent arms sale follows a previous authorization by President Biden for over $80 million in loans to Taiwan for the acquisition of American weapons last year. The United States continues to demonstrate its support for Taiwan's defense capabilities in the face of growing regional challenges.

EU leaders pick von der Leyen for second term as Commission chief

European Union leaders have put forth a slate of nominations for key leadership positions in the EU, signaling a new chapter in European politics. Ursula von der Leyen has been nominated for a second term as President of the European Commission, Antonio Costa for Chairman of the European Council meetings, and Kaja Kallas as head of EU foreign policy. Despite their differing political backgrounds - Ursula von der Leyen from a center-right party, Costa from a center-left party, and Kallas from a European liberal group - all three candidates have pledged their support for Ukraine. This unity was further underscored by the signing of a security agreement between the EU and Ukraine at the recent summit in Brussels. The agreement includes commitments to supply weapons, provide military training, and collaborate on defense industry projects.

In response to evolving global security challenges, von der Leyen emphasized the need for increased defense investments, proposing a budget of over 500 billion euros over the next decade. This call to action comes on the heels of data showing that the EU's defense spending increased by a mere 20% between 1999 and 2021, while China and Russia saw growth rates of 600% and 300%, respectively.

Hunter Biden sues Fox News over ‘mock trial’ miniseries

Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, has filed a lawsuit against Fox News for allegedly producing a miniseries titled "The Trial of Hunter Biden" with the intent to damage his reputation. Hunter's legal team has filed a complaint in a New York state court, accusing Fox News of engaging in politically motivated attacks against the president and his family, as well as unlawfully using graphic sexual images of Hunter Biden.

The lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages, as well as the disgorgement of any profits generated from the airing of the miniseries. Hunter's lawyers assert that they had previously issued a formal warning to Fox News in April, prompting the network to remove the miniseries from its platform, although advertisements for the program remained. A spokesperson for Fox News defended the network's actions, stating that they report on newsworthy events and individuals, such as Hunter Biden, who is a public figure. The spokesperson also indicated that Fox News is prepared to vigorously defend its rights in court.
