FedEx raises parcel delivery rates

Starting on January 6, 2025, FedEx will implement a 5.9% increase in parcel delivery rates. This adjustment aims to support the company's continued growth and enhance the quality of service provided to customers. The rise in tariffs will apply to deliveries within the United States, as well as to international import and export shipments. Specifically, pricing adjustments will be seen across various services including Ground Economy, Ground Multiweight, International Premium, International Priority DirectDistribution, Freight Priority, and Freight Economy.

Customers can anticipate higher rates for services such as residential delivery, deliveries to specific zip codes, and parcels necessitating additional handling. Notably, individuals shipping heavy or oversized items, as well as those residing in remote areas, may be more significantly impacted by the rate increase. In comparison, FedEx's competitor UPS has not disclosed any upcoming changes to it's pricing structure. Despite the annual rate adjustments, FedEx remains committed to providing reliable and efficient delivery services for its customers.

Indiana port adds rail capacity

The Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor has announced a significant commitment of $25 million for infrastructure upgrades aimed at enhancing global connections for Indiana businesses. The investment will include improvements to two railroad depots and the construction of a new harbor dock, providing essential support for the transportation of goods. One of the key enhancements will be the $6 million Pier 5, which will offer over 500 feet of new dockage specifically designed to handle bulk cargo from various carriers. With funding support from the U.S. Maritime Administration (Marad) and Indiana Ports, Pier 5 will significantly expand the capacity for ocean-going vessels and river barges.

Furthermore, the investment will also focus on increasing switching and storage capacity for railcars at the Lake Michigan hub, further supporting the efficient movement of goods. Additionally, the upgrade to Berth 5 will double the capacity for cargo traffic, introduce two additional docks, and establish Indiana's first container hub. Three Mile Island is reopening the Unit 1 reactor

Constellation Energy recently announced plans to revive the Unit 1 reactor at Three Mile Island, which was shut down five years ago. The revived reactor will be dedicated to providing power exclusively to tech giant Microsoft, which requires additional energy to support data centers and artificial intelligence operations.

The demand for energy has been steadily increasing in recent years as technology companies like Microsoft require more power sources to meet it's growing artificial intelligence needs. The opening of the Unit 1 reactor is expected to create over 3,400 jobs and add more than 800 megawatts of electricity to the grid. This move is forecasted to have a positive impact on the state and national economy, adding an estimated $16 billion to Pennsylvania's GDP. However, it should be noted that nuclear power has faced criticism from environmental organizations and groups over the past two decades due to concerns about nuclear waste. Currently, there is no permanent repository for this waste in the United States, with waste being stored at more than 70 active and closed plants nationwide.
