The United States government has allocated $135 million to support energy infrastructure in Moldova, following a recent visit by Secretary of State Blinken to the country where he met with President Maia Sandu. A portion of these funds will also be dedicated to combating Russian disinformation in Moldova.

Secretary Blinken highlighted that this investment will not only support Moldova's development but also help the country in organizing free and independent elections and moving closer to becoming a member of the European Union. The Moldovan government has been vocal about Russia's negative influence in the country, including interference in elections, which has hindered Moldova's path to EU accession.

Earlier, Moldova received financial aid of 774 million dollars, of which 300 million for energy security. Moldova has been facing challenges in its energy supply, particularly in natural gas, since the conflict in Ukraine began, as Russia has historically been its main gas supplier. Outdated infrastructure has also contributed to frequent power outages in the country since 2022.

First female president in Mexican history

The recent conclusion of elections in Mexico marks a historic moment in the country's political landscape, with the election of its first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum. A renowned climate scientist and former mayor of Mexico City, the 61-year-old Sheinbaum secured an impressive 60% of the vote, amidst a voter turnout of 61.7%. Sheinbaum's political career dates back to the early 2000s when she served as the Cabinet Secretary for Environment. In 2018, she was elected as mayor of Mexico City, where she successfully governed the nation's capital for five years. Throughout her campaign, Sheinbaum pledged to implement crucial reforms, including improvements to pension systems, greater support for small businesses, and the provision of free fertilizers for farmers. Additionally, she has vowed to address the pressing issue of crime and security in the country, particularly in light of the escalating crime rates during incumbent President López Obrador's tenure.

President Biden has already congratulated Claudia Sheinbaum on her meritorious election victory. One of the key points in the relationship between Biden and the new president of Mexico will be issues of migration policy.
