Uber, China's BYD, form partnership to deploy 100,000 EVs in EU

Uber and leading Chinese car manufacturer BYD have recently unveiled a collaborative partnership set to revolutionize the ridesharing industry. Under the agreement, around 100,000 BYD electric vehicles (EVs) will soon be integrated into Uber's platform across Europe and Latin America, with plans to further expand into the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand.

We took this video from Bloomberg Technology YouTube Channel.

The deal will provide Uber drivers with exclusive access to a range of invaluable resources, including competitive pricing, insurance options, financing solutions, and additional services tailored specifically for BYD vehicles. This strategic alliance not only highlights the growing interest in sustainable transportation solutions but also solidifies Uber's commitment to offering cutting-edge options to its global network of drivers. Despite facing obstacles such as the European Union's imposition of preliminary tariffs on Chinese EVs due to perceived unfair advantages stemming from government subsidies, BYD remains undeterred in its pursuit of market expansion. In response to trade challenges, BYD has strategically positioned itself for success by gradually moving production operations overseas, with plans already in motion to establish manufacturing facilities in Turkey, Hungary, and Brazil.

Meta agrees to $1.4 billion settlement in Texas biometric data lawsuit

Meta has reached a settlement agreement to pay $1.4 billion to resolve a lawsuit filed in Texas regarding the unauthorized use of users' biometric data. The lawsuit alleged that Meta unlawfully collected and utilized biometric data from Texas users through photos and videos uploaded to the Facebook platform. In Texas, strict laws prohibit companies from gathering biometric data without explicit notice and consent from users. The lawsuit specifically highlighted Meta's "Tag Suggestions" feature, introduced by Facebook in 2011, which collected biometric data without user consent. Following increasing concerns surrounding the use of facial recognition technology, Meta announced in late 2021 that it would be discontinuing its Face Recognition system on Facebook.

As part of the settlement agreement, Meta has agreed to pay $1.4 billion over a period of five years, as ordered by a Texas district court official.

TikTok accused of violating the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act

The U.S. Department of Justice has taken legal action against TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, for alleged violations of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The lawsuit contends that TikTok allows children to register for the platform without obtaining parental consent and gathers personal data from minors, including email addresses, phone numbers, and location information. Earlier this year, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) initiated an investigation into TikTok regarding potential COPPA breaches. This follows earlier accusations in Europe, where TikTok was fined for infringing on children's privacy. FTC Chair Lina Khan has emphasized the severity of TikTok's repeated violations, asserting that they knowingly jeopardize millions of children.

Furthermore, the lawsuit claims that TikTok has made it challenging for parents to delete their children's accounts. TikTok has challenged these accusations, asserting that it is continuously enhancing safeguards for children's protection. The platform reportedly removes suspected underage users, closely supervises content, and introduces additional privacy measures for minors. In response, the Department of Justice is seeking civil penalties and an injunction to halt future COPPA discrepancies.
