According to preliminary reports, a charter bus transporting Farmingdale High School students who were headed to Greeley, Pennsylvania for a much-anticipated band camp event met a dangerous fate on westbound I-84. The bus, by tragic accident, overturned and rolled down an embankment before coming to a stop in a dense forest adjacent to the highway. According to ABC7NY, the death toll from the tragedy has risen, with at least one man dead and five others in critical condition. About 40 others are reported to have suffered injuries of varying degrees of severity.
In a convoy of six buses carrying a total of about 300 schoolchildren, it was this bus that took the brunt of the disaster. Immediately after the accident, authorities were forced to shut down the westbound I-84 freeway from Exit 15, exacerbating an already dire situation.
