Last summer's deadly accident near South Bend, Indiana, caused by a truck driver's distracted driving, has resulted in multiple felony charges against the driver. Chasen Thompson, a 27-year-old truck driver, was involved in the tragic incident that left two people dead and five others injured. After several months of legal proceedings, Thompson's plea agreement was accepted in court this week.

We took this video from WNDU 16 News Now YouTube Channel.

According to local news outlet WNDU News, the accident occurred on the Indiana Toll Road near a construction zone in slowed traffic. Despite the traffic slowing down, Thompson failed to adjust his speed and caused a chain reaction accident. The collision was so severe that at least one car caught fire. Thompson later admitted to police officers that he was reaching down to adjust his radio when he collided with the slowed vehicles. Upon further investigation, he also tested positive for THC after agreeing to a blood draw.

The details of the recent plea deal have not been disclosed to the public, leaving many wondering about the possible consequences for Thompson's actions. However, a sentencing hearing has been scheduled for September 1st, and it is expected to bring some closure to the families and friends of the victims.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of distracted driving and the importance of always being alert and focused while behind the wheel. The consequences of even a momentary lapse in judgment can be catastrophic, as this accident has shown. It also highlights the need for stricter regulations and enforcement to prevent such accidents from happening in the future. As we continue to strive for safer roads and highways, it is important to remember that every driver has a responsibility to prioritize safety and avoid any actions that could put themselves and others in harm's way.
