Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Chad McCoy risked his life in a split-second decision to protect the lives of others. The incident occurred on Interstate 80, where McCoy collided with a wrong-way driver traveling at full speed. Surveillance video of the accident shows McCoy's heroic actions as he intentionally hit a driver in the oncoming lane to stop him and not endanger other drivers on the road.

Nicole McCoy, Sgt. McCoy's wife received an unexpected phone call Tuesday night from her husband, who explained that he would be home late from work. Sgt. McCoy had just finished his shift in Salt Lake County and was crossing the Tooele County line when he noticed cars on the road moving to the right. He then saw a truck moving in the wrong direction and realized that a passenger car was traveling at high speed in the wrong direction.

Within seconds, Sgt. McCoy made the brave decision to intervene and stop the impaired driver. Surveillance video captures the moment Sgt. McCoy hit the wrong-way driver, putting his life on the line to prevent a potentially catastrophic accident. McCoy's heroic actions were praised by many, including Colonel Michael Rapich of the Utah Highway Patrol.

Although Sergeant McCoy's actions were heroic, he believes he was simply doing his job. He knew he had a responsibility to protect the lives of others and was willing to put himself in danger to do so. Because of his quick thinking and bravery, everyone involved in the accident was able to return home safely.

Unfortunately, not all stories have happy endings. Colonel Michael Rapich reminds us that accidents involving drivers entering the oncoming lane can often be deadly. Drivers need to remain vigilant and attentive on the road, especially when driving on highways and interstates. Sgt. McCoy's actions serve as a reminder of the bravery and dedication of first responders who put their lives on the line every day to protect the public.
