The incident has left park visitors in shock, with one fisherman expressing his surprise at the unexpected violence. Sam Woods, who was fishing at the park when the shooting occurred, said he had no idea anything had happened until he heard about it later. "That's wild," he said. "You wouldn't think that. Not at all. I came out here to enjoy myself, which I still am. It's like, 'What? This really happened last night?' And not too far from where I am now."
Woods also noted that there didn't appear to be any indication of the shooting when he returned to the park the next day. "I'm here today, and I didn't know anything about it," he said. "For something like that to go on here, that's ludicrous. You wouldn't think anything like that would happen." The park is known for its foot traffic and nearby trail, and Woods said he typically wouldn't associate it with violent crime. "You know, southeast Portland, or a drug deal gone bad. But nothing like that here. That's just wild."
Deputies who responded to the scene gave first aid to the victim until emergency medical responders arrived and transported him to hospital. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.
