A 48-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder and assault at a homeless encampment in southwest Portland following a shocking incident in March. Ryan S. Fardrimer was charged with 12 counts, including robbery, after he allegedly drove up to the encampment near Interstate 5 and Capitol Highway and blocked three victims with his vehicle. Witnesses say Fardrimer then began shooting at them, hitting one of them in the leg as they tried to drive away from the campground.

The victim targeted by Fardrimer retaliated by hitting Fardrimer's car with his vehicle in an attempt to get out of the campground. However, Fardrimer did not stop there. He later found the same man in his truck and doused him with gasoline, threatening to set him on fire unless he was paid for damaging his own vehicle. The incident was reported to police when one of the victims was admitted to OHSU with a gunshot wound. Authorities immediately launched an investigation and soon arrested Fardrimer.

On Monday, a grand jury indicted him on attempted murder and assault charges, which could lead to dire consequences if he is found guilty. Victims' accounts of the shooting are horrifying, recounting the trauma they endured during the incident. Violence like this against the homeless is not uncommon in Portland, and steps must be taken to ensure their safety. The incident that occurred traumatized the victims, and it highlights the dangers that homeless people face every day. Violence against the homeless is not uncommon in Portland, and this is a concern for authorities.
