In a tragic incident on Saturday morning, a pedestrian lost their life after being struck by a train in Salem. According to the Salem Police Department (SPD), the accident occurred at the intersection of 12th Street Northeast and Marion Street Northeast around 9:40 a.m. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered that a woman had been hit and fatally injured by the train. It was determined that she had been standing on the tracks, facing the oncoming train. Despite the engineer's efforts to warn and stop the train, the collision was unavoidable due to the train's length and speed.
Due to the severity of the incident, road closures were implemented along the train tracks, stretching from Court Street Northeast to Silverton Road Northeast. Normal train operations and road access were restored by 12:05 p.m. as the train resumed its movement.
This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of the importance of exercising caution and adhering to safety protocols near train tracks. The SPD urges pedestrians to remain vigilant, follow designated pedestrian crossings, and never underestimate the speed and power of oncoming trains.
