You must first obtain a commercial learner's permit (CLP) and pass the skills exam in order to apply for a commercial driver's license (CDL) in Connecticut. Your CLP is valid for 12 months. If you don't obtain a CDL within that year, you must repeat and pass each of the necessary exams in order to obtain a fresh permit.
If applicable to the type of CDL you want, you might additionally need to take the air brakes, combination, passenger, and/or school bus endorsement tests.

You must be at least 21 years old and have a clean driving record to be eligible for the majority of free CDL training programs. You must also pass both a DOT physical and a DOT drug test.
