If a company is sponsoring my CDL

If a company is sponsoring my CDL, does that mean that they do the road test, or do I need to take it at the DMV? If I get my CDL in Florida, does that mean I can only get hired by a company that has a location here? Sorry for the questions, but Youtube and Google weren't being as clear as I needed.

As for getting hired, a CDL from Florida is valid nationwide, so you’re not limited to companies only in Florida.

Florida’s CDL is good all over the map. Don’t matter where you get it, it’s your passport to the open road anywhere in the U.S

Hey, if a company’s footing the bill for your CDL, that’s a green light to a solid start. Just make sure you ace that road test at the DMV.

You'll still need to take it at the DMV or licensing center, in every state I'm aware of. And no, if you have an interstate license you can work for companies regardless of their location. I got my CDL in PA, my first job was a company based in OK, next was IL, and current one is in OH.

I did the Swift Academy in Corsicana, TX, and we road tested with our instructors. They gave us like a document or something that we presented to the DMV that stated a certified instructor passed us, and we didn’t have to do it there. But of course that varies, so make sure you ask.

Most places have their own DOT-certified testers. You can work in any state, usually. If you move out of FL and try to get a local position in a different state, some companies require a CDL from that state. Every state has different requirements for transferring a CDL so it can be a pain in the ass sometimes.

let me get that straight, y’all telling me the female that was stalled was drunk and arrested and charged with dwi and the man that was driving the Jeep wrecked onto the tow truck and cause his own death. it’s that correct? this article is confusing or am I just not a good reader and dumb af? 🤔

Confused. Was she the driver of the stalled vehicle or the Jeep that hit the wreckers and stalled vehicle? I understood it to be she was in the stalled vehicle, therefore she is at fault for the jeep hitting them? Maybe I misread the article.

Unfortunately, if you think the insurance is high on one cargo van....you will find the premium on big rigs to be astronomical. Perhaps get an interest free credit card, pay the premium, then divide the payments into 6 or 12. But make sure you make those payments.

If you're a small, local owner/operator (such as a courier business), using something like a Ford Econoline, GM Express Cargo Van or a Sprinter van, you can probably talk to your local independent insurance agents and get some help. That's where I got my best help for my local operation.

What does it mean when semis turn their lights on and off at you?

Google keeps saying it means “thank you” but I’ve only seen this twice so I was wondering if it means “turn your lights on” or something else

If you're driving the opposite direction, your headlights are off or one is off. if you're driving the same direction and you just passed them, they are telling you it's safe to pull in front of them. (usually only done if you have a trailer) If they are behind you, they are informing you that you're driving lime an asshole, but it's usually the highbeams.

Mileage Pay Vs Percentage Pay

I am sure this topic has been discussed before and perhaps beaten to death but which pay is better in your opinion? Percentage pay of load or cents per mile? I see the pros of both but also the cons of both? And if you don’t mind sharing give me some examples of your experience.

I’ve done both, but I prefer the CPM route. If freight rates drop (and they always do), so does your pay if you are on the percentage plan. Also, being cynical, I never trust that I know for a fact how much the freight paid, thus how do I know I’m actually being paid honestly? Unless you are actually talking to the shipper , you cannot know 100% what the factual dollar amount was. CPM is more within my control, which goes back to the factual advice given on here for years: this is a performance-based profession. Run hard to get more miles which will equal more money. The only thing I wish sometimes is that we got paid by the pound.

Percentage pay is designed to protect the company from the volatile swings in the freight markets. When the market is good like it has been last year, the drivers can reap some of the benefits.

CFI only uses straps. You start with 4 and evatually have more than you'll ever need. Some of our bigger accounts require us to leave 2 straps. We will get 2 with the load.
Xander

12.07.2022
I don't think it is a DOT violation. Some shippers will require them, before they let you drive away with their product. Some companies have a policy of requiring them, in addition to the door seal. Plus, it is just a really good idea, protecting you from any liability should your trailer get broken into, and you didn't have a load lock to prevent it from happening.
Keanu
Keanu
12.05.2022
Load locks are bars placed in the trailer to help keep the cargo 'locked' in place. They are not actual locks. You are responsible to make sure the load is secure if possible. That may mean using load locks, straps, airbags, etc. Some loads dont require anything at all.
Moon
Moon
12.04.2022
Next time your truck is in the shop, check with them and see if they have some spare load locks you can put on the rack on your truck. The rack if I am correct should hold 4 full size load locks.
